How to Repot a Houseplant — The Complete Guide

We probably answer more repotting questions at Sunroom than any other single topic. Someone walks in holding a plant that's clearly outgrown its pot, or one that's been wilting no matter how much they water it, and they ask the same thing: "Do I need to repot this? And if I do... how?"

So we wanted to put together the full version of this — not just the quick steps, but the actual reasoning behind each one, the mistakes we see over and over, and the stuff that's different depending on what kind of plant you're holding. This is a long one, but repotting is one of those things where the details actually matter, so bear with us.

Part 1: Figuring Out If It's Actually Time

This is the step people skip, and it causes two opposite problems: either they repot too often (which stresses the plant unnecessarily), or they wait so long the plant is genuinely struggling before anyone notices.

Signs it's time:

Roots coming out of the drainage holes. This is the clearest, least ambiguous sign there is. If you see roots poking out the bottom of the pot, the plant has run out of room down there.

Water runs straight through and out the bottom almost instantly. When a pot is mostly roots and very little actual soil left, water has nowhere to sit and just channels straight through. If you used to wait 20-30 seconds for water to come out the bottom and now it's immediate, that's a sign.

The plant dries out unusually fast. If you used to water weekly and now you're watering every 2-3 days just to keep up, the ratio of roots to soil has shifted — there's less soil to hold moisture relative to how much root mass is drinking it.

Visible circling roots when you lift the plant slightly. Gently tip the plant and look at the bottom of the root ball, or slide it partway out of the pot. If you see roots wrapping in circles around the outside of the soil, it's root-bound.

The plant is top-heavy and tips over easily. Once the visible growth significantly outweighs the pot, the whole thing becomes unstable — top-heavy plants are also a sign the root system below hasn't kept proportional pace with a properly-sized pot.

Slowed or stunted new growth despite otherwise good care. If light, water, and season all check out but the plant just isn't pushing new leaves, restricted roots are a common hidden cause.

It's simply been over a year, sometimes 18 months. Even without obvious symptoms, potting soil physically breaks down over time — it compacts, loses its structure, and depletes of nutrients. A plant that looks fine can still benefit from a soil refresh on a schedule, not just when it's in visible distress.

Signs it's NOT actually a repotting issue (this trips people up constantly):

  • Yellowing lower leaves — usually overwatering, natural leaf drop, or occasionally nitrogen deficiency, not a size issue

  • Sudden droopiness — check watering and light first

  • Brown crispy tips — usually low humidity or tap water sensitivity, not pot size

  • Pest issues (spider mites, mealybugs, fungus gnats) — treat the pest first; repotting a pest-infested plant can spread the problem into fresh soil and stress the plant further while it's already compromised

A stressed plant that gets repotted unnecessarily on top of its existing problem often declines faster, because you're adding root disturbance to whatever was already wrong. When in doubt, treat the existing issue first, let the plant stabilize, and only repot if the sizing signs above are also present.

Part 2: Gathering Everything Before You Start

Doing this prep upfront saves you from having dirt-covered hands and realizing you're missing something halfway through.

The essentials:

  • New pot (sizing details below)

  • Fresh potting soil, matched to the plant type (details below)

  • A tarp, old towel, or newspaper to protect your work surface

  • Clean pruning shears or scissors, for trimming roots

  • Gloves, optional but nice for sensitive skin or plants with irritating sap (pothos, philodendron, and dieffenbachia can mildly irritate skin)

  • A watering can for the "water it in" step at the end

  • A trowel or old spoon for scooping soil into tight spaces

Nice to have, not required:

  • Isopropyl alcohol or a diluted bleach solution, for sterilizing shears if you're cutting through any rotten or diseased roots — this stops you from spreading rot from one cut to the next

  • Sphagnum moss, for topping off the surface or helping retain humidity around a sensitive root ball

  • Stakes or a small trellis, if the plant is going to need support in its new, larger pot

  • A chopstick or thin dowel, useful for gently working soil into root gaps without compacting it

Part 3: Choosing the Right Pot

Sizing. The single most common mistake: sizing up too aggressively. Going from a 6" pot straight to a 12" "for room to grow" means there's a large volume of soil with no roots in it yet — and that unused soil holds moisture for far longer than the plant needs, which is one of the most common paths to root rot. The rule we use: go up 1-2 inches in diameter, not more. A 6" pot moves to an 8", not a 10" or 12".

Material matters more than people think.

  • Terracotta / unglazed clay is porous and lets excess moisture evaporate through the sides, not just the drainage hole. Great for plants prone to overwatering issues (succulents, cacti, snake plants) or for people who tend to water a little too generously.

  • Plastic nursery pots hold moisture longer since nothing evaporates through the sides. Good for plants that like consistent moisture (ferns, calathea, peace lily) or for people who tend to underwater and forget.

  • Glazed ceramic behaves similarly to plastic — non-porous, holds moisture — but is heavier, which is worth considering for a tall or top-heavy plant that benefits from extra base weight to keep it from tipping.

Drainage holes are non-negotiable. If you love a pot without one, use it as a decorative outer cachepot and keep the plant in a plastic nursery pot with proper drainage sitting inside it. A pot with no drainage at all means excess water has nowhere to go, and it will sit at the bottom around the roots regardless of how careful you are with watering.

The "drainage layer of rocks at the bottom" myth. You may have heard that adding a layer of gravel or rocks at the bottom of a pot improves drainage. In reality, this doesn't work the way people think — water still has to saturate the soil above the rock layer before it can drain, due to how water moves between different-sized particles. It doesn't hurt anything, but it isn't the fix people believe it is, and it does eat into usable soil depth. A well-draining soil mix and a proper drainage hole do the actual work.

Part 4: Choosing the Right Soil

This is genuinely one of the biggest factors in whether a plant thrives after repotting or slowly declines, and it's the step most people give the least thought to.

For most tropical houseplants (pothos, philodendron, monstera, peace lily, dracaena, etc.): a well-draining all-purpose potting mix. Look for one that already contains perlite — those small white or tan chunks help keep the mix from compacting and let excess water pass through. If your bag doesn't have any, you can mix in extra perlite yourself, roughly 1 part perlite to 4 parts potting soil.

For aroids that like extra chunkiness (monstera, philodendron, pothos, especially larger or more mature specimens): some growers mix in orchid bark or coco coir alongside the potting soil, which mimics the loose, airy conditions these plants often grow in naturally. Not required, but it can help larger aroids that are prone to root rot in denser soil.

For succulents and cacti: they need a much faster-draining, grittier mix than regular potting soil provides. Use a dedicated cactus/succulent mix, or make your own by combining regular potting soil with coarse sand and extra perlite — roughly equal parts of each. Regular potting soil alone stays wet far too long for these plants and is one of the most common causes of succulent rot.

For orchids: completely different needs — orchid roots need airflow and are not meant to sit in dense soil at all. Use a chunky bark-based orchid mix, not potting soil of any kind. Regular soil will suffocate orchid roots within weeks.

For ferns and moisture-lovers (calathea, maranta, ferns): a mix that holds a bit more moisture works better here — regular potting soil is usually fine, sometimes with a little extra coco coir or peat mixed in to help retain humidity around the roots.

For cacti specifically needing extra drainage in pots without much depth: you can add a thin layer of pumice or perlite at the very bottom before adding the grittier soil mix, mainly to keep the drainage hole from clogging with fine soil particles rather than for the "drainage layer" reasons mentioned above.

Part 5: The Repotting Process, Step by Step

Step 1: Water the plant 1-2 days beforehand, not immediately before. A well-hydrated root ball is more pliable and slides out of the old pot more easily than a bone-dry one. But watering right before you start just makes everything muddier and harder to work with — give it a day or two to soak in and settle first.

Step 2: Prep your space. Lay down your tarp or towel. This is genuinely messier than people expect, especially with a plant that's more root than soil at this point.

Step 3: Remove the plant from its current pot. Turn the pot on its side. If it's plastic, gently squeeze the sides all the way around to loosen the soil from the walls, then slide the plant out by supporting the base of the stem, not pulling on it. If it's stuck, run a butter knife or thin trowel around the inside edge of the pot to break the seal between soil and pot wall before trying again. Never yank a stuck plant out by the stem or leaves — that's how stems snap.

Step 4: Inspect the root ball before doing anything else. This is the most skipped and most useful step in the entire process. Gently brush away some of the outer soil so you can actually see the roots.

  • Healthy roots are firm to the touch and typically white, tan, or light yellow.

  • Rotten roots are mushy, dark brown or black, and often have a distinct sour or rotten smell. These need to be trimmed off with clean, sharp scissors before you repot — packing rotten roots into fresh soil just carries the problem into the new pot. Sterilize your scissors between cuts if you're removing a lot of rot, so you're not spreading it from one section of roots to another.

  • Circling or heavily root-bound roots (roots that have grown in tight spirals following the shape of the old pot) should be gently loosened by hand. If they're extremely tight and won't loosen with your fingers, you can make 2-3 shallow vertical cuts up the sides of the root ball with clean scissors — this encourages the roots to branch outward into the new soil instead of continuing to circle in the old pattern.

Step 5: Decide whether to keep the full root ball or remove old soil. For most healthy repots, you don't need to remove much of the existing soil — just loosen the outer roots and move forward. But if you're dealing with rotten roots, pests in the soil, or switching a plant to a completely different soil type (say, moving a succulent out of regular potting soil into a proper gritty mix), it's worth gently removing more of the old soil from around the roots so the new soil type isn't diluted or contaminated by the old.

Step 6: Add a base layer of fresh soil to the new pot. Add enough that when you set the root ball on top, the top of the roots sits roughly half an inch below the rim of the pot. That gap matters — it gives you room to water without soil and water immediately overflowing over the edges.

Step 7: Center the plant and backfill around the sides. Hold the plant upright and centered while you add soil into the gaps around the root ball. Use your fingers or a chopstick to work soil into any air pockets, pressing gently as you go. You want the soil snug enough to support the plant upright, but not compacted hard — overly compacted soil restricts the airflow roots need and can slow drainage more than you'd want.

Step 8: Check the planting depth. The plant should sit at roughly the same soil depth it was at before — most houseplants don't want to be buried significantly deeper than they were previously, since burying the stem base can encourage rot at the point where stem meets soil.

Step 9: Water it in thoroughly. Give the plant a real, thorough watering right after repotting — water until it runs out the drainage holes. This helps settle the soil naturally around the roots and closes up any air pockets you might have missed by hand. If a lot of soil settles and sinks noticeably after this first watering, top it off with a bit more.

Step 10: Skip fertilizer for several weeks. The plant just went through a stressful transition. Wait roughly 4-6 weeks before resuming any regular feeding schedule, giving it time to settle into the new soil and put out new roots without also having to process fertilizer.

Part 6: Special Cases Worth Knowing About

Very large or heavy plants (big rubber trees, large fiddle leaf figs, mature palms): repotting solo can be genuinely difficult and risky for both you and the plant. Lay the plant on its side to slide it out rather than lifting straight up, and consider having a second person help support the plant while you work on the root ball and new pot.

Plants with sensitive, delicate roots (calathea, alocasia, some ferns): these tend to be less forgiving of root disturbance than tougher plants like pothos or snake plant. Handle the root ball as gently as possible, avoid unnecessary root loosening beyond what's needed, and expect a slightly longer recovery period with some temporary leaf droop.

Dividing a plant while repotting: if a plant has multiple distinct stems or crowns growing from separate root clusters (common in peace lily, sansevieria, spider plant, and many ferns), repotting is a natural opportunity to divide it into two or more plants instead of sizing up. Gently separate the root clusters by hand or with a clean knife along natural divisions, then pot each section separately using the same process above.

Bare-rooting for a full soil change: if you're dealing with significant root rot, a soil-borne pest infestation, or switching soil types entirely, you can remove all of the old soil from the roots (typically by gently rinsing the root ball under lukewarm water) before repotting into completely fresh soil. This is more stressful for the plant than a standard repot, so only do this when there's a specific problem that requires it.

Staking after repotting: if a plant is going into a noticeably larger pot and is somewhat top-heavy or vining, this is a good time to add a stake, moss pole, or small trellis while you have full access to the root area, rather than trying to wedge one in later.

Part 7: What to Expect Afterward, Week by Week

Days 1-3: Some temporary droopiness or a slightly wilted look is completely normal — this is transplant shock, not a sign you did something wrong. Keep the plant out of harsh direct sun and drafts during this window.

Week 1: Resist the urge to check the roots or repot again if things still look a little off. Constantly disturbing the roots during this settling-in period does more harm than the initial repot itself.

Weeks 2-4: Most plants start to perk back up and show signs of new growth resuming. If a plant still looks significantly worse after a month, it's worth double-checking that the pot size, soil type, and watering routine actually matched what that specific plant needs.

Weeks 4-6: This is typically when it's safe to resume a normal fertilizing schedule, once the plant has clearly stabilized and is pushing new growth in its new pot.

Part 8: Common Mistakes We See Most Often

  • Sizing up too many inches at once, leaving excess unused soil that stays wet too long

  • Using the wrong soil type for the plant — regular potting soil for succulents or orchids being the most common version of this

  • Repotting a plant that's actually dealing with a different issue (pests, watering, light) rather than a sizing problem

  • Watering immediately after repotting with cold water straight from the tap, which can shock an already-stressed root system — room temperature water is gentler

  • Fertilizing right away, before the plant has had any time to settle

  • Packing soil too tightly, which restricts airflow and can slow drainage more than intended

  • Repotting in the depths of winter, when most plants are semi-dormant and recover from root disturbance more slowly — fall (before things get too cold) or spring tend to be better windows
